Live in the house and train the dog to be your companion, then eat it. Or use it like in I am Legend and hunt around with it until it gets dramatically killed.

I say bury the old mans body and finish raiding that house, better to be safe then sorry, you can always find that dog again probably.

Well, then I would try to sneak behind him and kill him (if he looks hostile)(and anyway, he will be pretty shocked if he notices me). And thus he would get a RPG. This is getting Serious. >:)
