Wait, why are we with the Lannisters? I'm OK with that but why?
For those of you who had no idea what they were getting into, here is some basic info about the Great Houses:
-The Starks are lords of the North, the largest of the Seven Kingdoms (see the map). They're as close to protagonists as we get in the series, very honourable, but also often stern and, surprise, cold. Their sigil is a grey direwolf on a white field.
-The Lannisters are the richest, since they control most of the gold mines located in the West (see map) and are thus very powerful and influential. They, however, also happen to be ruthless a-holes that manipulate or just brutally crush any opposition so everyone is afraid of them. Their sigil is a golden lion on a crimson background.
-The Arryns aren't amongst the most powerful of the Great Houses, especially since their lord was killed just before the series' beginning but still have quite some influence over their lands. They are historically close to the Tullys and Starks but prefer remaining neutral in conflicts and are holed up in the Vale (see map, duh) with their main castle and seat, the Eyrie, being considered impregnable. Their sigil is a white crescent and falcon on a blue field.
-House Tully, lords of the Riverlands, the rulers of the central areas of the Seven Kingdoms. They are a (relatively) young House that controls a very fertile but not really defensible area. As such, they get attacked during almost every war that erupts and, cince they do not have as large an army as their neighbours, they usually count on their allies, namely the Starks, Tullies and Baratheons to defend them. Their sigil is a silver trout on a red and blue background.
-House Tyrell are sneaky bastards. They possess what is possibly the most stable of the lands, as well as the most fertile. They prefer to stick with the winners, often changing sides, even though they can assemble a larger army than any other House due to their riches and population. Their sigil is a golden rose on a green background
-The Greyjoys, as of the beginning of the series, only control the Iron Islands, a peninsula located between the Westerlands of the Lannisters and the Starks' North (see map). It is next to impossible to grow anything there, so they have become the vikings of Westeros, raiding and pillaging whoever lives close to the coast. They keep trying to rebel against the rulers of the Seven Kingdoms and are thus hated by their neighbours. Their sigil is a golden kraken on a black field.
-House Martell of Dorne hold the southernmost area of the Seven Kingdoms. Dorne has a relatively small population and isn't particularily rich but is famous for resisting invasions, that are lured into the desert and worn down by hit-and-run attacks. They are more autonomous that most other regions, since they weren't added to the realm by conquest but rather peaceful marriage.Dornishmen remain culturally different from most of the Seven Kingdoms and have a strained relationship with their neighbours, especially the Tyrells. Their sigil is a sun pierced by a golden spear.
-The Baratheons are the rulers of the entire continent at the start of the series. They are the historical lords of the Stormlands, located north of Dorne. Since they are the rulers of the Seven Kingdoms, they command every other House, although they are not the richest or the most powerful House, nor do they hold very fertile lands or great masses of people. The Baratheon sigil is a black stag on a golden field, with a crown added since they became kings
-The Targaryens are the House that has ruled the Seven kingdoms for centuries from the Crownlands, an area north of the Stormlands, that is held by House Baratheon after they became kings and is distinguished by holding the capital and throne of the realm. They were great conquerors that have moved from the Valyrian Freehold, located on Essos, just before its destruction and have proceeded to take over most of Westeros in a matter of years. However, they slowly became decadent and were overthrown just prior to the series' beginning, with most of the family slaughtered and the remains fleeing. As such, the possess next to no power or lands and their loyalists are scattered. Their sigil is a three-headed red dragon on a black field.
This is all, of course, a cursory introduction
