Honestly if the dog may have an owner that has supplies I would follow the dog till it took me there and try to find the owner and if he/she is hostile, kill him/her and take all of his/her stuff. If not befriend. Better two than one. If the dog doesn't have an owner or you have to kill the owner you can keep the dog and you can always go back to the house to get more supplies.
