Help me with this math problem.

Postby Karen219 » Thu Aug 07, 2014 9:11 pm

I suck at maths, but I do need to be able to do this in an exam extremely soon.

Can someone break it down for me in the order it should be calculated? Break it down into the simplest of ways :P

8+(100-95)/4/(100+0.6(95-100))

Please and thank you.

P.S My lecturer has the answer at 9.54, google says 8.01

Well, everything in parentheses should be calculated first, starting with the innermost parentheses. This gives

8+(5)/4/(100+0.6(-5))

and then

8+5/4/(100-3)

and eventually

8+5/4/(97)

From here the division would would be calculated from left to right, giving

8+1.25/97

which then gives approximately 8.01. I'm trying to figure out how someone would get to 9.54, but I haven't figured it out yet.

PEMDAS, order of operations, e.g. parentheses first, then exponents, multiplication/division, then addition/subtraction.

So,

Do what's in the innermost parentheses first.

blah blah (95-100) blah

So you get 8+(100-95)/4/(100+0.6(-5))

Then do the next step in each parentheses, which for the second is the multiplication before subtraction

8+(5)/4/(100+(-3))

Then finish off the parentheses

8+(5)/4/97

Then do the whole division, which results in ~0.012

The final answer SHOULD be 8.01, so your lecturer is either wrong, or learned a different set of order of operations than he/she should have.

edit: omg sniped.

Following the normal math laws it should be 8.01...

Perhaps your lecturer is trying to break math.

Thanks, helps a lot!

Either I've misread or lecturer is wrong. I'll find the original piece of paper.

Maybe the problem posted is different from the one your lecturer gave. And also good luck on your upcoming exam
I have nothing to say.
