Races.

Well I'm relatively new to Vortex Wars and well I played a game against another guy as Legionnaires, one of the 3 free starting races, and my opponent was Ninjas.
Now I kept attacking him with greater numbers by about 1 or 2, but about 90% of the time he repelled it, and I look in the shop and ninjas give no bonus's. (By the way the game had bonus's deactivated.) So is it that the races that cost more actually DO give bonus's or was it that he was just extremely lucky?
