Depends on map size. The question really should be:
Does +1.5 man make a bigger difference than +5 defence or attack.
I have found pumpkins bar none to be superior in gaining an early and commanding lead... which can be maintained in a small map.
However, if in a large map, you end up facing off with Vamps in the end, forget it.
I was pumpkins with over 50 properties.
Opponent was Vamps with 20.
He came back in a battle of 8s to win. I'd say on average I won 1 out of every 5 rolls.
He won 2 out of every 3 or 4.
Totally crushing.
So, to restate, if vamps can never have more than 1/2 of your turns as pumpkins, then pumpkins are best (this is determined by map size). But if there is a good chance that they can roll more than 1/2 times your rolls, probably don't use pumpkins. Another way to look at this.
Vamps are less likely to make it to the end of the game.
Pumpkins are more likely to make it to the end of a game, but less likely to win in the end, especially if a vamp opponent makes it with even 1/2 your size.
These judgements are based on FullMap/Hardcore/Random settings with 8 players.
