Moderation

Postby Reznorock » Wed Mar 09, 2016 11:57 pm

It's come to my attention that an individual on this forum received a lengthy ban as opposed to a permanent ban.

From my understanding it is due to making a comment that a moderator didn't take kindly to.

Now, having been a moderator for a much larger and much more rowdy group of gamers before, I understand having players that rub you the wrong way, but I also understand that you need a thick skin to be a moderator, it's about the rules, not your personal biased towards any particular individual.

I don't care if said individual is skirting the rules and trying to get a rise out of you or what, thats part of the job, no power trips, no drama, you need to sit down and decide if an individual is actually breaking the rules or if you simply don't get along with them, if you are feeling emotional, then you need to take a step back before making a decision.

That being said, this is a fairly small game, people are doing whatever in the forums, clans are pointless, the drama and power trip nonsense is utterly silly, these are just forums, not the game, which I might add if mods are finding themselves with enough time on their hands for petty squabbles, then I might suggest they do something for the game itself, such as promote it, talk to administration and get it re uploaded to armor games so it gets more attention. maybe see if it can be ported to facebook.

I don't have anything against any of the mods, but I do have a big problem with behavior such as this, I think being a moderator is a responsibility that should be taken seriously (not too seriously) and certainly some consideration should be given to age and maturity levels when it comes to a moderator, and an eye kept on them as well to some degree, because it changes people, not always for the good, which can affect a playerbase, even the game itself.

That being said I feel perhaps moderation ought to be split between game mods and forum mods. If that isn't seen as a big concern due to low playerbase, then DO something about it.

Currently there are two moderators. BeatlesFan and myself. Lopdo has given me the reigns and I'm doing the best I can. Moderators will not (typically) handle bans that involve interactions between them and the banned. In this case, BeatlesFan settled the ban that involved Highlanders behavior towards myself. That is the most appropriate way for us to handle it at this time.

As for splitting between the game and forum, we simply do not have the numbers to do such a thing and we are not currently looking for any new mods, and we won't be for the foreseeable future.

Unless behavior is breaking the rules then it shouldn't matter, even if an individual is skirting them, unless I missed a rule that someone hurt your feelings or made you feel upset that I am not aware of, I understand it is a difficult job, but there aren't a lot of people around. And I think relying on mods to give their attention to a game where there isn't even an interest in making it grow or improve upon the game, which is really to the determent of the players more than anyone else is nonsense. Either take it seriously or don't, but a balance has to be struck, especially for people that are volunteering their time for the game. Nothing against lopodo or the mods, but the constant limbo of VW causes problems across the board. Some routine maintenance alone would be nice, the lag that occurs alone is bonkers.

Just one question : Why is nobody currently looking for any new Moderators ? It will be very good if there will be additional Moderators in game. This does NOT mean that a current Moderator do a bad job
or something like this. This is just a question because I think we have 2 main Player Locations: A - Europe and B - USA. Beatlesfan is in USA and Fangfallen is idk, but I think they simply can not be anytime
in the game, so it would very good if they will receive more support with a 3rd or 4th Moderator. And - Who appoints a Moderator ? Lopdo ?

I think a skeleton screw is likely going to be it until more is done with the game, if nothing more is done, then additional moderation isn't going to happen, theres no need for a dozen mods when you likely don't even have 100 active players at any given time, the forums don't need a lot of moderating just someone to keep an eye on things.

Generally any given game isn't going to have a lot of moderators, there isn't a need for a huge number of them. When I was a mod, there were about 7-8 moderators, In game wasn't worried about too much except for potential hackers and cheaters which the designer had a system for , it was mostly moderating the chat room and especially the forums. We had some mods that went overboard, which actually ended up making things worse on the forum end for it. which is likely another reason why we aren't getting more mods, 1, we aren't getting the activity levels to justify the need, and 2, nothing is likely to occur where constant moderation needs to occur.

Well, I am on VortexWars since more than 2 years now, playing nearly daily and I can tell you that I heard often comments from other players that they would
appreciate to have a Moderator Team of minimum 4 guys. Reason: As I said already - It is not possible to note all the main (bad) events when you just have 2
Moderators. We are talking about a game which combine people from nearly all continents, so how should 2 people do the job if they also have a private and
working life ?
So I don't agree with what Reznorock said in his last post. But I agree with Reznorock on the point that we need to have Moderators which are able to have an
objective view on the behaivour of the players and on the game itself. This include that they have to take a step back and see the overall what is good for the
whole community and not just for the Mods or any other player alone.

Well it's not exactly about the number of moderators so much as it is about coverage, like moderating the forums or the game during peak hours.

As it stands , things are slow, and if there were more moderators then there would be a potential for over enforcing the rules, many people are going to be having other things to do in their lives (moderators) so you never know who will be around when, there has to be a balance between moderators and active players.

As for what I said about being a moderator, that wasn't this game, that was another game and those 7-8 people moderated the aforementioned areas and looked into reports etc for a game of several hundred thousand players, of course minimum activity level was 10-20 thousand players, like...during the week at night, with upwards of 80k+ active from friday - monday ( because we had players from all over the globe) . And mostly it was in the chat rooms or forums where we were needed. So it isn't necessarily the amount of mods that matters.

As for behavior, when the game was still in it's early stages we tried a lot of different methods, granted we were given a certain amount of leeway most of the rules were warnings, with maybe a 1-3 day ban depending on severity of the offense, of course, we had people of all ages playing the game but there were warnings about language as well, so that wasn't an issue, spam was an issue, flooding the chat or the forums with nonsense. persistent harassing of other players etc. but insulting other players or using foul language wasn't a big problem (as an example) we also had free for all sections of the forums where everything goes (except porn and that sort of thing) so in a lot of ways it was a bit more complex, at the same time it was simple as well.

That is excactly what I meant. AND I mean this game / forum need at least 4 Moderators to do this job in a decent way.

Who are you to say that no mods won't be for the foreseeable future?
Fact: You are arrogant.
Fact: You have no respect for senior players.
Fact: You are not old enough to even have a beer let alone moderate.
Fact: The game is better off without you.

1. We can all be arrogant sometimes. It just stands out more for him because of that green name he has
2. Just because he doesn't get along with highlander does not mean he doesn't have any respect for the senior players, or any other player for that matter (and he also could enter that category himself, considering how long he has been around)
3. How do you know that?
4. Hm. So you say. Unless your opinion is somehow a fact, I don't see why you'd even mention that.
All in all, I think who you're looking for is techgump.
